Design Technology

The Design Technology department aims to develop essential and transferable skills for each and every pupil whilst providing them with exciting learning experiences. We want our pupils to develop resilience when faced with a problem, be tenacious when things go wrong and be creative when challenged.

  • Intent

    At St. Joseph’s middle School we intend to deliver a Design Technology curriculum which develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills. Children will know more, remember more and understand more.

    We intend to design a design technology curriculum with appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum Design Technology Programmes of study, to fulfil the duties of the NC whereby schools must provide a balanced and broadly-based curriculum which promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils and prepares them for the opportunities and responsibilities and experiences for later life

  • Implementation

    As a result of our curriculum, St. Joseph’s students will be inspired to:

    • be innovative & passionate when designing and making, to critique the merits of technology and to develop skills for life.
    • in order to realise our vision, our curriculum will provide students with opportunities to:
    • engage in hands on learning in well-resourced workshop, ICT suite and kitchen;
    • view high level exemplar design and making which shows them what they are truly capable of;
    • develop underlying knowledge of the theory that clearly relates to the practice taking place;
    • see their teachers modelling best practice, whether designing or making;
    • work alongside teachers who actively challenge and support them to achieve their potential;
    • question the very idea of technological development using real world examples that encourage them to express their views;
    • develop lifelong practical life skills that will enable them to cook, repair, design & make in their lives outside of St.Joseph’s middle School;
    • develop the knowledge, understanding and skills that will enable them to pursue their dreams and ambitions beyond their years at St.Joseph’s.
  • Impact

    The impact of our curriculum will be evidenced in:

    • our students’ enthusiasm for the subject which is displayed both in and out of the classroom;
    • our students’ work and their progress as evidenced in their practical, written and oral work;
    • the increased number of students taking D&T in High School;

    Above all, our students are aware that design and technology is integral to life in our modern world. They are keen to push the boundaries, try out new ideas, take a critical view and apply their skills in imaginative ways. They are able to see the bigger picture, viewing themselves as positive users of technology whilst also being critical of its possible impact on the world, both positive and negative.
