- Our School
At St.Joseph’s we offer a wide range of sports as part of the PE curriculum as well as extra curricular activities. We have achieved the Sportsmark Award. Sportsmark rewards exceptional delivery of the national schools’ sports strategy. This year the school has received additional funding (£7500) for the development of PE and sport. We have been able to increase specialist teaching hours since September 2013 and purchase identified sports equipment e.g. for gymnastics and basketball. We also have coaching sessions for cricket and repainted the lines on the basketball and netball courts on both playgrounds. We have a professional dance teacher for sessions with Y5/6/8. A key focus this year is girls’ and boys’ volleyball and the participation rates have really increased since September 2016 in both KS2 and KS3.
Our children are actively involved in nearly two hours of PE and sport per week as part of the curriculum. In the PE and games lessons the children have opportunities to take part in the follow sports: football, rugby, netball, hockey, cross country, cricket, volleyball, rounders, athletics, dance, basketball and gymnastics. As stated in National Curriculum all KS2 pupils are expected to reach the requirement of swimming 25m.
In addition, there are wide range of sports clubs at lunchtimes and after school for the pupils whatever their ability. (See Parents page – Extra Curricular Activities) We have teams representing the school in area competitions and some pupils have represented the County, West Tyne and the Hexham Partnership of Schools.
